The Week that Was
We had a most enjoyable evening last Thursday hearing of Rev Tim Narraway’s passion for South Africa, its people and its wildlife, and also hearing from our 2025 Tertiary Exchange Scholar Ky Wellsmore. It was also great to see David again after all his geophysics commitments overseas and in Queensland; he did a grand job as always as MC. It was aslo lovely to have so many guests.
Tim first introduced us to South Africa with a delicious sample of the South African cream liqueur Amarula, made from the fruit of the African marula tree; locally called the elephant or marriage tree. He gave an excellent presentation about the people, regions, its wildlife and flora and also a potted history of South Africa.
Ky reported on his progress with his Bachelor of Computer Science at UOW and how much he is enjoying living on campus.
Sunday’s Market
Thank you to everyone who helped at Sunday’s market. The July Market is usually our smallest market but at least two stallholders had to pull out because they suffered serious damage to their gazebos due to high winds at Moruya Market the day before. Interesting that takings at the gate and the van on Sunday were up slightly on last July’s. We were lucky to have another glorious day. There’s talk of organising a deep clean and reorganisation of the van in the coming months.

Out and About
Sharpen up for our Trivia Challenge with Moruya
The annual Cinders Trivia Challenge with Moruya Rotarians is on Tuesday 19 August at Moruya Golf Club. Our Club is the current Cinders Trophy holder. This is always a top fun night and our Moruya friends are always wonderful hosts. Our Club is keen to retain the much coveted trophy, so please invite friends and family, particularly if they are known trivia tragics. We need all the brain power we can get! More details to come.
Community role in future emergencies
Moruya Rotary was well represented at Batemans Bay Rotary meeting last week to hear from Brett Henderson, NSW President of the Australasian Institute of Emergency Management. He has also served as an Emergency Operations Controller in several NSW LGAs. Brett is analysing the performance of the various bodies involved in the management of our 2019-2020 fires with a focus on the need for liaison and communication with locals when it comes to emergency preparedness and response.
The report of Brett’s talk in the Moruya newsletter said the publication of his findings “will spare few punches”. “Local government fares very badly. RFS suffered from lack of communication. But the event was unprecedented and considering that the fires spread over state boundaries it was extraordinary that so few fatalities occurred….his report… promises to be the most thorough analysis of the actions of officials, volunteers and communities in emergency management in the areas affected by the fires.” President Tony Armstrong added, “Overall, a thought -provoking night.” Brett’s talk has also prompted Tony to put a battery powered radio on his shopping list.
