A great night in Moruya on Tuesday to defend the Cinders shield. Ange, Ann, Steve and Laurelle, Gero and I went along to represent the Club and, after a Chinese buffet dinner, knuckled down as ‘Wagonga Warriors’. Although there were only six of us compared with 22 from Moruya, we did Narooma proud coming equal second! There were four teams on the night with numbers down on both sides. Next year it will be our turn to host and bring the shield back to Narooma!
This year’s MUNA has been a disappointment for both our club and the two Canberra clubs that so generously funded the second team to attend this past weekend in Old Parliament House in Canberra. Both Narooma High teams pulled out three days before the event. No funds can be reimbursed at such a late stage so it will be a considerable expense to us and the two Canberra clubs.
Our treasurer Lynn Hastings is resigning from the Board and Françoise Cleret has kindly offered to take on the treasurer’s position. Thank you Lynn for all your time and hard work over the years as the Club’s treasurer, and thank you Françoise.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 28th when Diana Bachman and Blake Heath will be inducted into the club. I hope all members can come along and welcome them into the Club.

The Week that Was
Moruya wins Cinders trophy
We may have been few in number at Moruya, but the quality of our Narooma team shone when we were off to a flying start at the 2025 Great Cinders Trivia Challenge against Moruya Rotary; unfortunately we could not maintain our opening salvo but did well nevertheless. Quizmaster Steve Picton was resplendent in his colourful jacket while quiz mistress Rhonnie South looked quite chic. Rhonnie and Quiz Mentor Keith Armstrong were kept busy throughout the evening collecting and distributing the various answer sheets. Quiz Master Steve explained at the start that whichever table won, they would win the trophy for their Club. It was a well organised evening and lots of fun.

The 1993 Ashes Series saw Shane Warne bowl “The Ball of the Century” against Mike Gatling. That year saw Narooma’s Paul Rayner, a strong English supporter, organizing the first quiz competition between our clubs and it was he who suggested the Cinders format, where at the end of the quiz the papers were burned to cinders in a wooden bowl. That bowl was itself burned to cinders in the fire which destroyed much of Narooma’s gear and its place was taken by the large wooden board on which each year’s result is shown on a brass shield. There is enough space on the board to service the next thirty years.
Club sponsors two RYPEN students
Our Club is sponsoring two Narooma High students to this year’s Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) 5-7 September at Sutton – Jenna Jewell Harkness and Delilah Weir in Year 10. Their applications have already been received by our District Coordinator, thanks to Year 10 Form Advisor to Dijana Burkinshaw and Ange Ulrichsen. The cost to the Club is $420 per student. Jenna and Delilah will report back to the Club on Thursday 11 September; they will be accompanied by their families, teacher and the High School Principal.
RYPEN is a youth program that has been running in our District for many years. It aims to give young people self confidence and self-esteem and to enhance a belief in their abilities and talents. It is not about rewarding the super confident or those who already have leadership skills. Equally, it is not for young people with behaviour problems or other serious issues.
RYPEN targets students who are often overlooked for leadership or other programs which focus on personal development. The school is asked to forward students currently in Year 9 and 10 that they think have potential but just don’t know it themselves.
Out and About
From Batemans Bay Rotary
The Bay’s guest speaker last week was Viv Wheatley who spoke passionately about the local Bay Theatre Players who are celebrating 50 years this year. The Bay Players has grown from humble beginnings at a small, multi-purpose community hall at Observation Point at Batehaven to their fully owned designated theatre at Batemans Bay purchased in early 1997. Many volunteer hours went into fundraising and construction to convert the old Vinnies building into a performance ready theatre. The Bay Rotary Club is following this up with a theatre night at the Bay Players on Thursday 30 October, preceded by dinner at a local restaurant.
