The Market on Sunday
Thanks to everyone who helped out on the day. We were lucky with the weather; the threatened showers didn’t eventuate and the sun came out as did many of the visitors in town as well as many locals.
Last Thursday’s Guest Speaker
What a top night last Thursday hearing author Kirsten Nixon talk about her delight and satisfaction from writing her first book – Voices of Entrepreneurial Women. She also mentioned the fear and trepidation she felt as to how it would be received but her fears were unfounded. The 30 or so who attended found her a really interesting and enjoyable speaker. This was a literary event we hosted for the River of Art Festival, the first time we’ve done this.
It is clear that the 17 women Kirsten interviewed for her book inspired and empowered her to “Follow where your heart leads” and turn her dreams into a business. Many also became good friends. The warmth of the interviews and the passion of these women shine through.
Interesting that Kirsten used AI software to transcribe her interviews and then edited them. She was fortunate to have the help of friends with useful skills – one an editor and another a graphic designer. She was “Super happy” with cover. She said the whole process “transformed her”. She is already gearing up to write two more books including one about her and her husband’s passion for flying.
Ä few inspiring words; “Things come to us when we most need them””, and “Find your passion and pursue it relentlessly”. Her book is available online as a paperback on as an e-book.

Wear a Hat and Lift the Lid
Narooma Rotary will host a Hat Night next week on Thursday 9 October to ‘Lift the Lid on Mental Illness’, for World Mental Health Day. Please invite family and friends AND encourage them to wear a hat, either favourite, most eye-catching, or wildest. Prizes will be given.
Our guest speaker is Chrissy Guinery a life coach, counsellor, author and mental health advocate. Chrissy is passionate about helping people navigate life’s transitions with confidence, clarity, and joy. She’s supported thousands through grief, growth, and self-discovery via coaching, workshops, the written word and inspirational speaking. Her books include Falling Up Stairs, When the Smoke Clears and Room to Breathe.
‘Lift the Lid on Mental Illness’ is Australian Rotary Health’s (ARH) annual fundraiser for mental health research; money raised goes to ARH.
Club donates for premature baby monitor
Our Board has responded with a $500 donation to a request via the Rotary Club of Canberra to contribute to Rotary D9705’s purchase of life and sight saving monitoring equipment for the Canberra Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit . Each O2/CO2 premature baby monitor costs $25,000. The Unit admits approximately 700 – 750 babies each year, more than 300 of whom require assisted ventilation using sophisticated equipment not available elsewhere; about 350 babies are admitted from the area covered by D9705, including Narooma.
The Hospital needs at least two but preferably four monitors to cater for demand. Premature babies have immature lungs and require respiratory support for sometimes months after birth. Constantly monitoring oxygen and CO2 levels can avoid complications that can lead to brain damage, lung damage and blindness. The initial request to the RC of Canberra came from Peter Cursley, Chairman and founder of the Newborn Intensive Care Foundation charity. The RCs of Canberra, Canberra East and Hall have assisted the Foundation in the past.
