Hilma has now left to return home to Finland. Thank you Françoise and John for transporting her to Sydney. While in Sydney she bought a beautiful opal necklace with the money we gave her, a beautiful reminder of her year here.
Thank you everyone for giving your time to Hilma. She will not be our last exchange student; we’re hoping to host again in the not too distant future.
The meeting this week will be a chance for everyone to come along and discuss the outcomes of the planning meeting. You should have a copy of the final report; contact Ann if you haven’t.

The Week that Was
MUNA thanks to two Canberra Clubs
We have sent a big ‘Thank You’ this week to the Rotary Clubs of Canberra Burley-Griffin and Canberra-Murrumbidgee for co-sponsoring an extra 2-person team from Narooma High School to the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) in Canberra.
Our Club has had a close partnership with MUNA sponsoring a 3-person Narooma High team for MUNA over many years. Narooma High’s Year 11 this year was very keen to have an additional team for this national event which our Rotary Club was unable to finance. MUNA registrar Helen Deutsch’s Canberra Sunrise RC alerted other Canberra Rotary Clubs to enable this request. Participation in MUNA is such a rewarding and educational experience for students and provides a unique opportunity particularly for regional schools. The two teams will go with their teacher Monique Wicks to Canberra for MUNA 15-17 August and report back to our Dinner meeting on Thursday 28 August. One team will represent Ecuador; the other team Timor Leste.
From our Board Room
The Board made the following decisions at the July Board meeting.
- Members’ dues for 2025-2026 have been cut to $150 per year with a subsidy of $165 per year provided by income from the Food Van on Market Days. Members can pay more than $150 should they wish.
- A Special Meeting of the Club on Thursday 4th September at 3.30 pm (before the September Board meeting) at Narooma Golf Club will vote on amendments to the By-Laws of our Constitution. A discussion paper will be sent to Members by 8th August 2025.
- A summary from the Planning Meeting for 2025/26 has been distributed and will be discussed at the Dinner Meeting this Thursday 10th July at the Golf Club.
- A meeting for those interested to discuss everything around the Markets will be held on Thursday 17th July at 1.00pm at Club Narooma. If you have suggestions or can’t attend, please email secretary@naroomarotary.org.au.
- A Mobile Phone and sim card will be purchased for the Club.
- The Board supported a grant application for a young local apprentice’s travel and living costs so he can attend TAFE in Albury. He is a former Narooma High student. The application will be submitted by September 2025.
- The Prostate Cancer Support Group is in winter recess. It will resume in September.
- The food van roster will now have three shifts; the last shift to do the pack up.

Out and About
We may be small…
Our Narooma Club may be small but it is wonderful that the success of some of our projects are inspiring neighbouring Clubs.
Batemans Bay President Neil Simpson writes in their current bulletin that their Board has decided to start a Business Breakfast as a Rotary project, having “looked at the successful Narooma Rotary Business Breakfast”. He said Narooma’s Breakfast meeting seems to be much appreciated by those who attend and a good community service project for Batemans Bay Rotary. Preliminary enquiries suggest the idea would have good support in the Bay, especially from sole traders and small business and from those not associated with the Chamber. Their first planning meeting is scheduled soon.
It’s interesting to note that our Club adapted Bega Rotary’s Business Breakfast model; our Club sees them as a vocational rather than a community project. Laurelle spoke about the Business Breakfasts at the PETS Conference in Broulee earlier this year.
Meanwhile one of our Bega Rotary friends at our Changeover expressed interest in coming to our Pride of Workmanship Awards night to see how we organise it. Pride of Workmanship this Rotary year will be on Thursday 26 March 2026.
From Moruya Rotary
It’s the time for forward planning as we enter the new Rotary year. Last week Moruya Rotary’s brainstorming session used the Golden Circle theory, a technique Moruya President Tony has used in his own work experience. Members set out on a post-it note why they are Rotarians, then on a second note how their experience could be enhanced, and for some a third note suggesting what projects could implement that enhancement.
Two strong themes came out in their Why column. The first was around improving our community (both locally and globally); the second was around fellowship, companionship, and personal enrichment.
