Ian Noble was a research scientist for 25 years at the Australian National University where he focused on the interactions between people and their landscapes. He led several international science co-operations and assessments on fire management, forests, biodiversity and climate change. This work led to increasing engagement in the interface between science and policy. In 2002 he joined the World Bank with the challenge to incorporate climate change into the Banks’s $100 billion per year of loans and grants to developing countries. Since retiring from the Bank in 2011, he has continued to advise governments, UN organizations and the private sector on adapting to climate change.

He was acknowledged for his contribution to the IPCC’s 2007 Nobel Peace Prize and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology Sciences and Engineering. He currently splits his time between Narooma and Fiji, where his partner continues to promote adaptation to climate change in the World Bank.

Presentation Title: Climate Change and our Future – Beyond the Science

Summary: For several decades the public debate about climate change has largely

focused on the science; is climate change real and what should we do about it? For decades national governments have debated the scientific findings and how to respond, but with little progress. But responsibility for the amount of climate change we will experience and how we will experience it is moving to the hands of an odd mix of players –  good and bad. These include state and local governments, the military, our neighbouring countries and ultimately us.
